The sculpture shows a broken figure of a woman, as if the image is struggling to emerge from ruin. It is inspired by Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter who lived from 1907 until 1954. She created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life.
The sculpture is made with serpentine granite and is the second in a series which includes the first Birth of Venus, created in marble that was displayed at the National Botanical Gardens.
Mai Thi Thu Van is known for her love of nature and wanted to show her love for the beautiful full moon in this creation. The sphere carved into the largest of the five pieces of sculpture results in dramatic casting of the moon’s shadow onto the opposite stone.
The sculpture represents the notion that we carry our memory with us. Our experiences make us who we are, and our memory is with us: at times the not so memorable; and other times the memorable.
